Good news for Americans wanting to come to Luxor

Officials at the US state Department have downgraded the travel warning for citizens considering travel to Egypt, urging Americans to consider the risks rather than avoid all nonessential travel.

The security situation in Luxor, Aswan, and the Red Sea Resorts, including Sharm-el-Sheikh, is now considered calm, the State Department said.

Unforgettable adventure with our children in lush village location - Review of Flats in Luxor, Luxor, Egypt - TripAdvisor: "We've just got back home from probably our most unforgettable winter holiday yet. Flats in Luxor was my wife's choice and to be honest I would probably chosen a boring hotel complex, just for convenience - but how glad I am now that we stayed in one of Jane and Mahmoud's flats. Why? Because although we enjoyed all the stunning attractions of the tombs and temples, and sunset trips along the Nile, and days spent by the pool in the Winter Palace Hotel, it was getting to know the villages and lush countryside around the flats by bicycle and on foot that really made this holiday special. We cycled along pathways under the palms trees and alongside banana, sugar cane and other plantations. We stayed at El Gezira (closer to the ferry), rather than El Goubli. Our youngest boy of eight got to play football in a nearby field with other children his age.
Although not as sophisticated a location as the big hotel chains on the other side of the Nile, the view from the rooftop of the flat was quite quite simply spectacular: the verdant plantations and beyond distant villages and palm trees, and in the distance the temple of Hatshepsut nestling in the hills in which also lie the valley of the kings and valley of the nobles. Also good for sunsets and stars at night. Much better for us as a family than staying in a hotel.
On arriving my wife's first comment was on the size of the apartment - 'we should have brought my parents too!'. Everything was in good working order, the water hot and the fridge cold.
We would certainly stay here again. The only thing I would change would be to heat the pool in winter. We could get in the pool to cool off after days out in the sun, but it wasn't warm enough to stay in for more than a minute or so at a time. But this wasn't that big a deal - we simply paid to go to the luxury pool at a 5 star hotel in Luxor and spent the day there when our children wanted time to simply play in and around the pool.
Jane is very well-informed - about Egypt past, present and future and a very interesting person to talk to. And her husband Mahmoud is well known in the surrounding villages, making it easy to make friends and get things done.
Bicycles were great, but the roads take a bit of getting used to (cars seem to beep at every other road user just to let them know they are coming). Bikes were also good for avoiding dogs and the constant offers of taxis, feluccas trips, camel trips etc made by traders all the more desperate to earn some tourist dollars in the quiet period after the revolution. Even though it is understandable that taxi and boat drivers and restauranteurs etc were in desperate need to find tourists (some told us they had not worked in six weeks after the revolution drove tourists away) we were overwhelmed at times by the constant barrage of approaches. We learnt to say no in Arabic and simply walk on without any further response which was hard at times given their persistence. Jane's and Mahmoud's trips may be slightly more expensive than shopping around, but involve significantly less hassle and we were happy with what we got for the money.
It would be unfair not to mention the many locals employed by Jane and Mahmoud and the genuine warmth they showed in welcoming and helping us during our stay. I'm also glad that most of the money we spent in Luxor will go directly to locals employed by Jane and Mahmoud, and not the shareholders in a large hotel chain.

Tahrir Villa

Mahmoud has been trying to come up with a good name for our villa in the desert with the upside theme, bedrooms on the ground floor and living space on the floor above. He hasn't liked the names we had come up with so far Malkata Villa, Desert Villa, Upside Down Villa and we were talking last night and he has come up with the perfect name Tahrir Villa. Tahrir is the Arabic for freedom or liberation

1) It commemorates 25th January and the events of the last few weeks while the villa is being built
2) The location is in the middle of sugar cane and the fields, so free from development, noise and hassle
3) For the buyer or renter it is freedom from the rat race, freedom from grey skies and rain, freedom from the minutia of everyday life in the west, freedom to enjoy the Egyptian way of life, freedom to enjoy Egyptian culture and history

What a difference a week makes

Welcome to Luxor all returning tourists.

What a difference a week makes. Last week I went to meet the EasyJet flight from Gatwick to Luxor. This was the scene at the airport. There were 27 people on the flight.


This week it was entirely different, apparently 700 tourists arrived today on a variety of flights.
There was even a musical welcome.

Why spoil a good story with the truth?

It is so good to be online and to tell my readers the truth about what has been happening here in Egypt. I have been watching Al Jezera and the BBC and wondering which country they are reporting on, it wasn’t the Egypt I live in. Go destroy our livelihoods why don’t you. According to their own reports before yesterday the maximum number of people in demonstrating was 10,000 in Cairo. This is a city of 25 million, so do the sums .0004 % of Egyptians, Now you might be forgiven for thinking it was at least half the city judging by the news reports. Could they even have been creating the story, it was a tiny minority and the cameras focused on them continually. They did not report the MILLIONS who were not protesting at all. Here in Luxor we believe the protestors were 2-300 out of a population of 500,000, the sums .0006 %. Yet the news reports that it is unsafe to visit Luxor, what a load of poppy cock. I was here the entire time, I had guests visiting the sites, going on sailing trips, smoking shisha in the coffee shops at 11pm at night. I went to the dentist in central Luxor no problems. But that does not sell stories. There was a waiting room full of mostly Christian women and several of them were so angry with the news reports.

I was interviewed by the BBC, I told them it is safe, business as normal. Did you hear any of that, of course not. It is much more fun the scare every tourist away, destroy the economy and the lives of ordinary Egyptians. Al Jezera was reporting at one point that there were tanks in Sharm, BBC World was saying there wasn’t! If there had of been it would have broken the terms of the peace treaty with Israel, pretty irresponsible reporting, well I got to the point I didn’t believe any of them. Al jezera said there were over 2 million demonstrating yesterday, BBC less than a million. All I can tell you is there were no problems AT ALL on the West Bank, Luxor where I live. If it hadn’t been for the TV I wouldn’t have known there was a thing wrong.

I am not going to go into the politics, what happens next etc, that is up to the Egyptian people but I totally resent the way the media has manipulated the story for their own ends and harmed many thousands who are dependent on the tourist trade. My message to the world, support Egypt, support Egyptians and come and visit West Bank, Luxor in total safety.

I have been asked why we are under Specialist Lodgings and other apartments are under hotels. I honestly have no idea, it took me ages to persuade Trip Advisor to give us a listing as I was determined to be honest and not pretend to be a hotel. Eventually they agreed and put us under Specialist Lodgings so that is why we are there. Why other apartment blocks are under hotels I can only speculate.

EasyJet to Flats in Luxor

The first EasyJet flight landed in Luxor 3rd Nov and I had three sets of guests on it. It is a natural combination a self catering apartment or villa from the Flats in Luxor Group and a cheap flight from EasyJet. So how did my guests find it using EasyJet for their cheap holiday in Egypt to see the ancient culture? How did it compare to a deal using a charter flight and hotel. Well we came out on top!!

First the price they paid for their flight depending on how far in advance they booked the flight. The cheapest was £87 return and the most expensive was £250 return. So to get the cheapest deal on a flight to Luxor, Egypt, book early.
Every one of them said they would use EasyJet to fly to Luxor again and would recommend it to their friends. Most of them took their own food but those that did have the food were quite satisfied.

So the cost of one week if you book in advance and were a family of 5 sharing one of Flats in Luxor three bedroom apartments with private swimming pool. Would be £164 per person, full board would be £234, that’s right a holiday in Luxor Egypt for a family of 5 for £820. EasyJet/Flats in Luxor; what a combination.
