I have heard from two sources now that changing travellers cheques is almost impossible in Luxor. Only Thomas Cook will change them, the banks and hotels are both refusing to change travellers cheques. So I suggest you bear that in mind and look at alternative ways to bring money to Egypt.
Cash is always a good alternative here and you will get a much better exchange rate in Egypt if you bring dollars, Euros or sterling. ATM's abound in tourist areas and big cites.
