Being Green in Luxor - Responsible Tourism in Egypt

I first got interested in Responsible Tourism on a holiday I took holiday to Japan. The ethos of this holiday was having a good time, enjoying your holiday AND being ecologically friendly whilst doing it. From simple things like buying chopsticks and not using disposable ones, to bigger things like using public transport, we were encouraged to Think Green. We stayed in local Japanese run accommodation and ate in local restaurants, using local food, avoiding international chains at all costs.

I liked this kind of holiday; you got a much better feel for the country, people, food and life.  Lots of people who come to Egypt also want this experience so I decided to use what I had learnt in our Nubian Eco Village http://www.nubian-eco-village.com/

Firstly we would only use the internet for advertising, printed material is carries with it the taint of deforestation and I wanted to avoid that at all costs.

Then the accommodation would be built using local designs, the DOME is the big feature of the rooms, cooling the rooms the way the Egyptians have for many years. Hassan Fathy the world renowned architect researched this building design and used it extensively in his designs. It allows rooms to be kept cool without the need of air conditioning.

We would have liked to use mud brick for the rooms but as the houses at New Gurna are now showing, the rising water table causes problems with this material. Constant water at the foundations and mud brick are just not compatible and we wanted to build for the future not just for a quick gimmick. So we used local baked brick but in the traditional Nubian design. We incorporated shelves, cupboards and even niches in the shower room, into the design which eliminated the need for some furniture. Wood has to be imported in Egypt and we wanted to avoid overuse.  The walls were built with thick walls to help with insulation. This makes the rooms delightfully cool. We even experimented with a room constructed of palm branches (with a proper toilet and shower).  Now there are 8 rooms sleeping 16 people in a mixture of single, double and triple rooms.

But most of the land is devoted to growing food for the in-house restaurant. Guests can view vegetables and fruit being grown to provide them with delicious meals. Some food does have to be bought but this is also locally bought and grown.

We also tried to be imaginative about tours, offer green alternatives like sightseeing by donkey, Nile cruising by sailing boat and bike hire. We also offer walking tours with a local guide. These tours are ideally suited to Egypt and indeed donkeys and sailing boats were used throughout Pharaonic history. .
Finally we applied for and were granted a listing with Responsible Travel, their criteria for awarding a listing is very tough and we were gratified to see our efforts acknowledged.

So for a green, ecologically friendly, sustainable holiday in Egypt visit the Nubian Eco Village Luxor.

Featured Apartments in Luxor - Nubian Villas

Nubian Villas
Over on the West Bank we have developed a small village of traditional one bedroom villas. No roads on the West Bank have names which makes life a bit more fun. However once you have been there once finding your way is no problem and we always offer a complementary pick up to all our guests.

This satellite map shows the location next do to our larger Goubli property. The satellite picture was taken in June 2009 before we finished the properties but at least you can see the foundations.
These villas are for sale, long term rental or holiday rental. There is plenty of availability for Christmas. Please contact us at info@flatsinluxor.co.uk for more details.

Staff on the premises 24/7 and they maintain the communal areas, provide security and will run errands or help with translation. Built in 2009 these are our most recent project and aimed at those guests looking for a more ecologically friendly and green holiday property. Traditional architecture and building methods were used on this development. Each villa consists of a one bedroom studio with a separate kitchen and bathroom.

Flats in Luxor photographs

We were lucky enough to have a professional photographer, Bruce Hemming, come to Flats in Luxor to take photos for a magazine article. He them sent me a PDF and asked me to chose one, how on earth do you chose out of this stunning array of property photographs. He was doing a feature on property for sale in Luxor, we were talking and felt that investors were being more realistic and not looking for a quick buck but a holiday home or retirement property that they would have for years. Property bought and sold on that basis makes everyone happy.

We have four buildings with flats, villas in the Nubian Eco Village and the Upside Down Villa, which is a luxury villa. All these are for sale, prices range from $50,000 to $150,000 USD and all papers are in order.

• East Bank
o One bedroom ground floor
o Three bedroom 2 bathroom first floor
• West Bank
o Arabesque house (access to Goubli facilities)
 Two bedroom ground floor
 Three bedroom first floor
 One bedroom penthouse
o Goubli (with swimming pool and restaurant)
 Three bedroom 2 bathroom (g, 1, 2, 3 floors)
 One bedroom penthouse (planned)

o Al Gezera (with swimming pool)
 Three bedroom 2 bathroom (1, 2, 3 floor)
• Villas
o One bedroom domed villas (access to Goubli facilities)
o Ezba villa partially complete
o Desert Upside Down Villa partially complete

If there isn’t something in that little lot that takes your fancy I will be surprised. All these properties have proper papers and we would arrange transfer.

Villas in Luxor - Nubian Eco Village & Upside down Villa

The Nubian Eco Village with its one bedroom villas are not our only villas, we are also building an upside down villa out by Malkata. It is a delightful location, very cool. Mahmoud reckons the Pharaohs knew what they were doing building out there. It seems to pick up every breath of wind. This was my idea for once but Mahmoud was very taken with it. Put the bedrooms on the ground floor, the coolest part of the building and have the lounge upstairs to get the views. This is going to be a deluxe building, 4 bedrooms all ensuite, pool and a huge lounge. Although we will rent it initially, the idea is to sell it. A great family house in a great location.

A Nubian "Green" Holiday Village in Luxor, Egypt

A Nubian "Green" Holiday Village in Luxor, Egypt: "A Nubian 'Green' Holiday Village in Luxor, Egypt

History, culture and nature. The beauty of Egypt -ancient and modern- is famous internationally. Now, visitors from all over the world can enjoy all these and even more in a new complex of ecologically friendly villas in Luxor.

(PRWEB) May 26, 2010 -- Villas in Luxor from Flats in Luxor, the perfect holiday escape experts.

Its creators aimed at constructing a Nubian village in the 21st century, respecting the local architecture and the natural environment.

Thus, the one bedroom villas are set amidst newly planted fruit trees and a thriving vegetable plot which supplies the complex's restaurant, and they were built by craftsman from Edfu with traditional domes and arches.

The accommodation consists of a large main room or studio with a double bed and dining area followed by a wet room with shower, toilet and wash hand basin and a small kitchen. Outside a shady veranda overlooks the Theban Hills. Stairs lead to the roof, perfect for bird watching and star gazing, just one mile away from the Nile!

Residents of the village have access to a swimming pool, children's pool, library, free Internet and restaurant.

As Jane Akshar, co-owner of the complex says 'Looking for that hassle free holiday, want to help the local economy, need a more adult environment then our villas could be perfect for you. A hotel room with a kitchen set in lush grounds, admist the local Egyptian village. Within view of historical sites like the temple of Hatshepsut. This is what Egypt is all about!'

A member of the Flats in Luxor Group

The new villas belong to the Flats in Luxor group, founded in 2003 by Jane Akshar and Mahmoud Jahlan. Since then, they have accommodated thousands of visitors, many of whom return to enjoy the Egyptian hospitality.

Today, 7 years after their creation Flats in Luxor Group, which is registered in Egypt, have 4 apartment blocks with 21 flats, the Nubian Eco Village and the Upside Down Villa. They featured in the Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph and Boston Globe and have entries in the Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Responsible Travel, Tour Egypt, Trip Advisor and Virtual Tourist. The first business in Luxor to be officially recognised as 'green', the group uses local products and staff, low energy bulbs and green energy.

Villas in Luxor

We have had our hand forced and gone ahead with the Nubian Eco Village. We were leaving the land with crops but a new mains gas pipeline is being installed.

Once installed then you are not allowed to build over it so we quickly had to make a move. First we walled the land so that any work was secure.

We then got some builders from Edfu to make domed villas. We had hoped to build in mud brick but were informed that as the land was in the cultivation and with the problem of rising water this was not possible. This made perfect sense from what I have seen at the Hassan Fathy village. Where rising water is attacking the mudbrick and even installation of damp proof course and non mud foundations has not halted the rot. Although it was a disappointment as I wanted the entire construction to be of mud brick.

So if we could not use traditional materials we wanted at least the traditional style so the builder who has wide experience suggested all sorts of ideas and concepts. We are determined to use mud brick in the finish.

The decorative style of red and white bricks was a great idea and we approved that. They build the arch separately and then incorporate it into the structure. We are having domes as this keeps the building cool. He also has come up with other ideas.

Furniture is being incorporated, shelves in the bathrooms, bed platforms, cupboards all sorts are actually being built into the fabric of the building. It is really clever as well as being practical and money saving. Wood is expensive in Egypt

As we have plenty of large 3 bedroom units these villas are going to be semi detached one and two bedroom units. As ever Mahmoud is cracking on and being as we are almost fully booked for Christmas we are aiming at finishing them in time for the winter season.

Building work has really progressed and I think the graceful arches and decorative brick work are lovely. We are only doing 4 units at present and the land behind them will be left to grow vegetables. These units like all our units are available for rent or sale. Property in Luxor is really growing and the governor encourages tourism developments. The area is very popular as it is privately owned with land registry, views across the fields to the Nile and to the hills to the temple of Hatshepsut. Away from the antiquities prohibited development area and the governor has no plans for redevelopment in this area.

With our Goubli building next door with its free WiFI, communal areas, swimming pool and restaurant these units have all the conveniences as well

Video of Goubli flats and our new development - the Nubian village

I just recently had a disaster when my camera stopped working for no apparent reason. Of course out here in Luxor getting a repair is nigh on impossible. There are times I wished I lived in Cairo. But my husband has kindly swapped mobiles with me, his was all singing and dancing with video and camera and mine just took calls and messages so I have done rather well out of it. It is taking ages to learn how to use it. Today was my first time trying the video. I took some of our new development the Nubian village and several of the Goubli building and two of the flats.

Just a short clip showing the new village starting life

The first is the outside and reception, with Adham in a starring role. He is one of our staff and was busy cleanign when I arrived.

The next is a detailed shot of the Mut flat and the swimming pool

Lastly a short clip of the next door Neith flat as it is a mirror image but the view is different, the Theban Hills
